‘Aasmani’ – Batik on Mulberry Silk! The ‘ Alpona Post cards that my maternal aunt, as a student in Viswa Bharati University in late 50s, had acquired, which she handed over to me, is a prized heirloom possession! When I thought of creating Batik on Silks, my idea has been to draw inspiration from the past, from our roots and culture! Alpona is an Art much known to all in Bengal. And at Santiniketan, ‘Alpona’ has been taken to the next level by the teachers and students. Alpona there fore has been my theme for this Batik! On pure Handloom Mulberry silk that i source from a loom in Bengal, the batik-wax resist done by applying molten wax using a thin brush. The Palla has been conceived with not only the ‘Alpona’ to be painted but using Colours that are subtle and yet add a brightness and elegance to the saree for what is a Festive saree without the right use of colours. The body of the saree has delicate splashes of molten wax and colours again and the border done by wax resist technique, kept simple to accentuate the palla and the body.
