      ‘Sambhar’ – আমার নতুন জামা! “Ashwiner Sharodo prate bejey uthechhe aalok monjeer… ” When Monsoon comes, can Autumn be far behind! The white clouds to sail across the blue skies soon, the ‘Kashphul’ and Shiuli, will soon announce, Autumn is not far behind. And with this it will announce too that, our greatest festival ‘Durgo Pujo’ is soon to come! A month or so before the Pujas, Maa and Jyethima would take us to the markets for shopping! ‘Notun jama’ (new clothes) was a catch phrase for us to brighten up our spirits! In those days, puja shoping was like an annual festival  for us- the  fun, the food and the energy and above all  নতুন জামা !  Maa preferred to stick to her Tangails for shopping, some times a Jamdani but her favourite has been always the batik silk! And for this Durga Puja 2024 and Festive collection, my Tribute through Dola Mukherjee Wearable Art would be the sarees and designs of yester years!     • Sui Dhaga
      This collection is our tribute to the rich crafts of India and abroad- comprising of embroidered sarees. As a student in the 80s, in a Convent school in Calcutta, we were taught needle work. We had classes twice a week and also sat for needle work exam along with the main subjects. My love for needle and thread has been inculcated by my teachers right from a very young age. And it is all but a foregone conclusion, that I would love to create a collection of embroidered sarees! Certain regions and states of India, have their own particular embroidery form – like Kasuti, Lambani, Sozni, Aari, Tilla, Sujni, Sindhi Embroidery, Chikan kari and much more. Some of them have their GI tag too. While I have used in my collection most of these embroidery forms, I have also tried to experiment and create designs using more common and familiar stitches like- Stem, Chain, Satin, Short & Long Stitches, Herringbone, French knot, short Running stitches and much more. Each saree in this collection is a  labour of love. Done by artisans from various parts of India, most of them living in back of beyond areas.  Dear friends, I hope this…

    • Kalpana – Creations on Silks
      ‘Kalpana’ is an Ode to the rich crafts and weaving heritage of India. As a child, I often would accompany my mother to the Block printing units where Maa would get her sarees done. It would be a myriad world of experiences for me – sight, smell, sound, touch, feel – the smell of the dyes and oil, the wooden blocks neatly arranged on the shelves, carved so intricately by hand, the long table where the saree would be tied, ready for stamping, the busy-ness, the sound of stamping and the Hindi film songs being played on the radio as the artisans worked on the fabric accurately! It has been all so Fascinating! In my mind’s eyes, I would revisit the unit often, as I dreamt and imagined to create a Collection that would be aesthetically appealing, using Block prints! ‘Kalpana’ was thus conceived!! Each saree, has been handblock printed with wooden blocks, carved so neatly and we have used handwoven pure mulberry silk from the looms in Bishnupur and Rampurhat, Bengal that I work with. Each saree has then being embellished with embroidery designs done by hand, by the artisans of rural Bengal and rural Bihar. We have used…
