Pally Katha – a Hand woven Bengal Cotton saree, soft and elegant with woven mauve and golden zari thin border. We imagined the saree as the canvas to paint a serene scene of a quintessential Bengal village- the mud hut, the banana tree and the greenery of the fields. All painted by hand on the pallu. Month of April witnesses Bengali New Year or Naboborsho. And Naboborsho heralds fresh beginnings ! An auspicious occassion, celebrated in each house and in rural Bengal! The saree therefore has been painted with some auspicious symbols on the body, with three leaves of wood apple tree (Bel pata), an indispensable offering to the Lord! Through the paintings, and using the saree as canvas, we tried to catch the essence and spirit of festivities in rural Bengal
